Horsemen, The (2009)
Saw meets Se7en
The Horsemen is a dark, suspenseful tale about detective Aiden Breslin (Dennis Quaid) who becomes embroiled in a bizarre serial killer case. Aiden is the typical detective who is so involved with his work that he’s lost touch with his two sons, while also grieving over the death of his late wife. As he slowly realizes he needs to put more effort into keeping his family together, he’s hit with a case that only forces him deeper into his work.
Aiden’s son Alex, played by Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker) takes on the role of raising his younger brother Sean (Liam James) in his father’s absence. Alex is perhaps affected the most by the loss of their mother due to his witnessing of her death. Alex repeatedly tries to do things with his father to keep the family together, only to be let down every time due to a case.
Aiden and his partner, “Stingray” (Clifton Collins Jr.), who looks like a badass detective from the 70s (mustache included), start to put together the pieces of
the latest case. The case, that includes victims tortured by means of suspension, precision surgery, and forced visual trauma (Patrick Fugit’s performance will be sure to leave a pretty picture in your head), is uncovered to be motivated by
religious prophecies and orchestrated by an unknown network of assailants.
As members of the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” begin to get caught one by one, the puzzle becomes much more complex (and close to home) than Detective Breslin ever wanted to imagine. What we end up with is an excellent blend of Saw-esque horror images combined with brilliant suspense with religious connections reminiscent of Se7en. This crime thriller is sure to keep you guessing who the mastermind is, and comes packed with a twist and ending sure to surprise the “hell” out of you.
