Setting the bar for modern masked slashers
Experienced makeup effects artist Robert Hall wrote and directed “Laid to Rest,” a slasher flick with a few modern twists. It’s very fitting that Hall is also an effects designer, as this movie boasts tons of very nicely executed gory special effects. Aside from the plentiful FX, the film puts a modern spin on the classic slasher. Our psychotic killer in “Laid to Rest” uses technology to his advantage to track his prey, while also donning a video camera on his shoulder. The dialog at times is cheesy and comical, and many of the characters’ actions are just completely irrational. Normally those traits make for a fun b-movie but I felt the overall concept and film making skills of “Laid to Rest” deserved to be complimented with a stronger script. Nonetheless, the likable characters mixed with the flat out disgusting and innovative death scenes make for a great modern slasher.
