Sometimes you have to appreciate the little things…like good old fashioned zombie movies (and Twinkies)

2-October-2009
Ruben Fleischer makes his feature debut with “Zombieland,” an all out action-adventure-comedy-horror that will surely be one of the top films of 2009. The story opens with a post-apocalyptic world overrun by flesh-craving zombies. These zombies however are not the typical Romeroian zombies. Rather, we have virus-infected, fast moving zombies reminiscent of “28 Days Later.” True zombie fans need not be afraid; aside from their quickness, the makeup and mannerisms of the zombies are everything true to the mythical creatures.
Columbus (Jesse Eisenburg, “Adventureland“), a nervous loner, forms an unlikely companionship with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) when the two run into each other on the highway. Realizing that everyone enjoys some company, especially at the face of the end of the world as we know it, the two begin their journey. Combine Harrelson’s bad ass machismo and perfectly timed one-liners with Eisenburg’s quick wit and nice guy attitude and you form a comedy match made in heaven. The two are seemingly the only two human survivors, that is until they run into a pair of conniving sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin).
After having a fast one pulled on them, the men decide to get revenge and track down the scamstresses. The group winds up on a journey together, forming the closest thing resembling a family that any of them have experienced in some time. After miles of ass-kicking and gunslinging, the ladies head towards Pacific Playland, a theme park in California. This is where the film gets better when one doesn’t think it can.
Overall the film is hilarious, action-packed, and serious at the same time. It packs in little messages about life while entertaining to no end. In the realm of zombedies (zombie-comedies), “Zombieland” is second to none. It’s on target in every aspect, well acted and directed, and has a surprisingly original storyline for this genre. Not to mention the opening intro is one of the best of all time. “Zombieland” has something for everyone, not just horror and comedy fans. The funny and violent parts are well balanced by a few serious moments, and this film cannot be reviewed without mentioning Bill Murray’s cameo. Great directing, great cast, amazing film.
