Let’s face it, most romantic comedies these days follow a cookie-cutter approach that involves almost the same scenarios, a level of predictability, and just slight twists to make them not seem as complete rip-offs of each other. While The Proposal (directed by Anne Fletcher, 27 Dresses), starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, follows this formula for the most part, it manages to be its own movie moreso than most of its contemporaries. The story, written by Pete Chiarelli, has some parallels with movies like The Wedding Date and Green Card, but don’t let that fool you. The writing is clever and sharp rather than dumbed down and dull. At times it’s apparent that the movie was scaled to entertain the mass audiences, but what this movie really thrives on is the performances of the cast. Reynolds and Bullock are hilarious, and props must be given to Ms. Betty White. Overall a really fun watch for comedy fans.
