25 Years Later; Still Being Rocked by Amadeus

Rated: R (Director’s Cut; nudity), PG | Review date: 4-Dec-2009

Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus is the dramatization loosely based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last 10 years of his life as told through the accounts of the much envious and aging Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) from an insane asylum. The epic masterpiece spans the better part of 3 hours (director’s cut), which to some might sound like a snooze fest. However, Milos Forman’s scary ability to choose the perfect musical companions to each scene is sure to wake up any dozing viewer. Tom Hulce’s haunting performance as Wolfgang is pure classic with his boisterous laugh and ability to grasp the larger-than-life persona of a true genius. What stood out most for me was the character development which accurately depicted the high as well as the low darker aspects of human emotion. The great cast performances, fabulous costume and set designs, and absolutely breathtaking musical renditions make 1984′s Amadeus one of the greatest biopics that will be sure to stand the test of time just as Mozart’s music does.
