Roman de gare (2007)
Director: Claude Lelouch | Rated: R | Review date: 30-Dec-2009
A magic-trick-wielding sadistic killer on the loose, a missing husband and father, and a best-selling author being questioned by the police about the disappearance of her alleged ghostwriter; if this doesn’t sound like the groundwork for an excellent novel than I don’t know what does. Claude Lelouch directs this mysterious crime thriller about an author, played by Fanny Ardant, and three different tales intertwined to inspire her next great novel. Dominique Pinon stars as…well saying who he stars as might give too much away. Pinon gives an excellent performance and is quite convincing. The film also stars Audrey Dana as Huguette, the main inspiration for the book. Roman de gare features excellent acting performances all around and is a fresh and original story that would really make an excellent novel. From the beginning it keeps the viewer guessing, throwing several misleading clues into the mix. The ending becomes a little predictable, for me at least, but doesn’t draw away from the excitement and satisfaction of the story.
