The word on the street is that Kick Ass truly does kick ass. Seeing the red-band trailer featuring Hit Girl earlier this year, I was intrigued by this one. Based on the comic involving a geeky comic loving teen Dave (Johnson) who one day decides to become a super hero, Kick Ass was sure to be a fun watch.
I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, I was thoroughly entertained. Chloe Moretz and Nicolas Cage provide much of the film’s appeal, which is essentially balls-to-the-wall brutal violence. The nerdy Dave is a relatable and likable guy who we cheer on and hope that he gets the girl. My main problem with this film is that it is a teen film, but packed with imagery not suitable for most. Sure the film is given an R rating, but doesn’t that just make kids want to see it even more?
While Hit Girl was hilarious and provided some of the most awesome scenes in the film, seeing her mercilessly murder victims whom most of which we have seen commit no crime rubs me the wrong way a bit. All in all this film was a blast to watch, full of laughs and excitement and even had some great shots and a good score. Make no mistake though, this is not a comic book movie for kids to see, this is an ultra-violent shoot ‘em up fest for the comic and FPS loving kid inside us adults.
I believe most of the hype around this movie is coming from teens who’ve seen the movie because it pushes boundaries and is just so cool. Cool it is, but as a serious movie it’s nothing too outstanding. As a comic book movie it comes nowhere near Watchmen.
