Before Sunset (2004)
Director: Richard Linklater
Writers: Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke
Starring: Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy
A movie like 1995′s Before Sunrise was so perfect and left off so realistically that the idea of a sequel should have been something to be immediately disregarded. Luckily for us the team of Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke believed in Before Sunset and have crafted possibly the best sequel to come out in recent years.
The film answers our biggest questions about what happened after that one night Vienna. It takes place in Paris where Jesse (Hawke) is on a book tour and runs into Celine (Delpy) for the first time since the day they met. The on-screen chemistry of the duo is unbelievably natural. Again we find ourselves submerged into the basic conversations of the two, hanging onto their every words, genuinely caring about them as people.
Few films have this effect on me, and Before Sunset manages to pull this off in such a simple and realistic manner. One cannot imagine a better companion to such a beautiful film that was Before Sunrise. In the midst of talks about a third installment, well I know only one thing: if Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke believe it is meant to be then we’ll undoubtedly be in for another beautifully shot, expertly acted, and incomprehensibly touching film.
