House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Director: William Castle
Writer: Robb White
Rated: Unrated (some violence)
Cast: Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Carolyn Craig, Elisha Cook Jr., and Julie Mitchum
It’s time for another review of a Vincent Price classic in honor of my Halloween reviews (what do you think…should this be part of the tradition?), and big surprise, another I’m seeing for the first time. House on Haunted Hill follows Price’s character Frederick Loren and his wife Annabelle (Ohmart) who throw a party in which the five attendees will each receive $10,000 (keep in mind this is 1959 dough) assuming they can make it through the night. Oh, and the house as a disturbing past involving many deaths and alleged hauntings, no big deal. The Lorens seem to have questionable motives though as events start to unfold throughout the night. The result is excellent performances all around and some very creepy moments. The film takes the whodunit story to a scarier level and gets there in a way only Mr. Price can take us.
