In the world of movies, there are those that aim to entertain and then there are those that are made to provoke thought. Alex Pacheco’s Praxis is certainly the latter. Praxis is a portrait of a young man who’s life is on the verge of a breakdown. Rather than show us typical and predictable situations, Pacheco instead takes a more abstract approach and immerses the viewer into the main character’s mind in a unique and nonlinear fashion.

Baumbach’s own childhood experiences are conveyed in this quirky comedy drama dealing with the ramifications of a divorce involving two writer parents living in Brooklyn. Most of the film follows brothers Walt and Frank as they transition between shared custody and deal with choosing sides. Perhaps it’s because I can’t really relate to the main theme of the film, but I found certain aspects to be somewhat disappointing. White on Rice is Dave Boyle’s follow up to 2006′s Big Dreams Little Tokyo. I absolutely loved Big Dreams and have closely been following Boyle’s emerging career since. Needless to say, I jumped on the first opportunity to grab the Sneak-Peek Edition of White on Rice. I was not disappointed.
In the same spirit as Big Dreams, White on Rice follows a central character who is a bit of a misfit. However, rather than a refined Japanese-speaking wannabe business man, our hero here is an actual Japanese man with no real talent to speak of. More >

Synecdoche, New York is the film directorial debut for Charlie Kaufman, who’s wrote such acclaimed pieces as Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. One thing is clear after viewing this cinematic gem: Mr. Kaufman has the eerie ability to transfer his deep and profound writing onto the screen. This film is unlike anything I’ve seen in quite some time. The obscure and often bizarre visuals almost resemble a David Lynch-like world of imagination and physical metaphors.

Comedic master Larry David stars in Woody Allen’s latest narrative, Whatever Works. David plays Boris Yellnikoff, an egotistical, rude, and anti-everything scholar who seems to be too smart for his own good. His know-it-all attitude causes his relationships to deteriorate and frequently pushes him into a suicidal state. Everything changes when Boris meets Melodie (Evan Rachel Wood).
