Director/writer: Christopher Ward | Rated: n/a (suggestive themes) | Review date: 18-Jan-2010

Person of Interest is writer/director Christopher Ward’s debut effort that follows a series of missing person cases within a small New England town. Sheriff Nickie Welles, played by Elise Rovinsky, puts every effort she has into solving the cases. Driven by the potential loss of her job, she’ll stop at nothing to figure out who’s been causing the town so much horror. Nickie enlists the help of James Hart (Cuyle Carvin), a local psychic. Once (2007)

Director: John Carney | Rated: R (language) | Review date: 15-Jan-2010

Once is one of those simplistic masterpieces that manages to captivate audiences with very little effort. It’s a modern day approach to the musical, replacing the theatrical song and dance routines with honest and heartfelt singer-songwriter ballads. The performances by the guy and girl, played by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, were astounding, so much that I at times forgot that they were acting. The relationship between the two on camera is a far cry from the mushy and unrealistic Hollywood romance most often seen. More >

Praxis

Praxis (2010)

Director: Alex Pacheco | Rated: n/a (suggestive themes & nudity) | Review date: 14-Jan-2010

In the world of movies, there are those that aim to entertain and then there are those that are made to provoke thought. Alex Pacheco’s Praxis is certainly the latter. Praxis is a portrait of a young man who’s life is on the verge of a breakdown. Rather than show us typical and predictable situations, Pacheco instead takes a more abstract approach and immerses the viewer into the main character’s mind in a unique and nonlinear fashion.

Squid and the Whale, The (2005)

Director: Noah Baumbach | Rated: R | Review date: 12-Jan-2010

Baumbach’s own childhood experiences are conveyed in this quirky comedy drama dealing with the ramifications of a divorce involving two writer parents living in Brooklyn. Most of the film follows brothers Walt and Frank as they transition between shared custody and deal with choosing sides. Perhaps it’s because I can’t really relate to the main theme of the film, but I found certain aspects to be somewhat disappointing. The main things that made this film enjoyable to me and provided most of the humor were Jeff Daniels and Jesse More >

White on Rice (2009)

Director: Dave Boyle | Rated: PG-13 | Review date: 12-Jan-2010

White on Rice is Dave Boyle’s follow up to 2006′s Big Dreams Little Tokyo. I absolutely loved Big Dreams and have closely been following Boyle’s emerging career since. Needless to say, I jumped on the first opportunity to grab the Sneak-Peek Edition of White on Rice. I was not disappointed.

In the same spirit as Big Dreams, White on Rice follows a central character who is a bit of a misfit. However, rather than a refined Japanese-speaking wannabe business man, our hero here is an actual Japanese man with no real talent to speak More >
