Kick Ass (2010)

Director: Matthew Vaughn Writers: Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, Mark Millar (comic), and John S. Romita Jr. (comic) Released: April 2010 Cast: Aaron Johnson, Clark Duke, Evan Peters, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, and Chloe Moretz Rated: R (drug use, sexuality, extreme violence, much involving children)

The word on the street is that Kick Ass truly does kick ass. Seeing the red-band trailer featuring Hit Girl earlier this year, I was intrigued by this one. Based on the comic involving a geeky comic loving teen Dave (Johnson) who one day decides to become a super hero, Kick Ass was sure to be a More >

The Ghost Writer

Ghost Writer, The (2010)

Director: Roman Polanski Writer: Robert Harris Rated: PG-13 Cast: Ewan McGregor, Kim Cattrall, Pierce Brosnan, and Olivia Williams

Roman Polanski returns to the big screen at full force and shows us just how a mystery film is made with The Ghost Writer. Robert Harris adapted and co-wrote the screenplay with Polanski for this sleek thriller based on his own book, The Ghost. The story follows a professional ghost writer, played by Ewan McGregor, hired to complete the autobiography of former British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). Turns out, the previous ghost’s work was brought to an More >

Avatar (2009)

Director/writer: James Cameron | Rated: PG-13 | Review date: 31-Jan-2010

James Cameron’s Avatar, quickly being called one of the greatest films of all time, has already placed itself as the highest grossing film of all time (not considering inflation). The big questions are: Is it worth the hype? Is it really that good? Isn’t it just glorifying the use of CGI while ignoring the basics of film making? No doubt those questions will long be debated, but one thing is certain for me after viewing this piece: it rocks!

Now I’m not going to jump on the wagon and call this the greatest film of all More >

Lovely Bones, The (2010)

Director: Peter Jackson | Rated: PG-13 | Review date: 9-Jan-2010

The Lovely Bones is director Peter Jackson’s follow up to 2005′s King Kong, which is based on the novel of the same name by Alice Sebol. The fantastical crime drama follows the Salmon family after daughter Susie (Saoirse Ronan) is brutally murdered. Mark Wahlberg plays Jack, the father, who goes a bit overboard in search of Susie’s killer. Things take more of an imaginative turn when Susie begins to give her family signs, which are received mostly by Jack.

It wouldn’t be a Peter Jackson movie without some kind of stunning visual More >

Up in the Air (2009)

Director: Jason Reitman | Rated: R | Review date: 6-Jan-2010

Up in the Air, Jason Reitman’s follow-up to the phenomenally successful Juno, stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a man who’s career is based around ending those of others. His work takes him around the country firing individuals, though Ryan doesn’t seem to have a problem with it – in fact he is quite content with his lonesome lifestyle. I can’t say I’ve disliked Clooney in any movie even if the movie itself wasn’t great, and this is no exception. Clooney is superb and movingly captures his character’s sometimes depressing More >
