Fish Tank (2009)
Feb 28th
Director/writer: Andrea Arnold | Rated: n/a (language/strong sexuality) | Review date: 21-Feb-2010
Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank has won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and after viewing it there’s no surprise as to why. The film stars newcomer Katie Jarvis as Mia, a troubled 15 year old growing up in a fairly low income area of England with her drunken and abusive mother (Kierston Wareing) and her younger sister (Rebecca Griffiths). Things take a big change when Mia’s mom brings home Connor, played by Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds).
Mia spends her days wondering around town, typically getting into trouble and doing More >
Before Sunrise (1995)
Jan 22nd
Director: Richard Linklater | Rated: R (language) | Review date: 16-Jan-2010
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star in this basic drama that does away with all the exaggerations and pretenses of Hollywood romances. Richard Linklater instead takes us on a simple and conceivable journey through Europe where two lone travelers cross paths. Hawke and Delpy’s chemistry was incomparable and their characters were portrayed with utter realism. The film really thrives on the story and it really causes us to feel for and relate to the characters. Though simplistic, it manages to capture the emotions felt when one falls in love without More >
Once (2007)
Jan 15th
Director: John Carney | Rated: R (language) | Review date: 15-Jan-2010
Once is one of those simplistic masterpieces that manages to captivate audiences with very little effort. It’s a modern day approach to the musical, replacing the theatrical song and dance routines with honest and heartfelt singer-songwriter ballads. The performances by the guy and girl, played by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, were astounding, so much that I at times forgot that they were acting. The relationship between the two on camera is a far cry from the mushy and unrealistic Hollywood romance most often seen. Instead, this film gives us More >
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Jan 3rd
Director: Guy Ritchie | Rated: PG-13 | Review date: 30-Dec-2009
Director Guy Ritchie is well known for his lower budget crime flicks, so many people like myself were surprised to hear when he began working on the latest rendition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Not only would this period piece be a stray for Ritchie from the modern crime scene, but once the cast was released this film had blockbuster franchise written all over it. Needless to say, Ritchie delivered on the final product. What’s most surprising about this epic mystery thriller is that Ritchie manages to preserve his More >
Amadeus (1984)
Dec 4th
Rated: R (Director’s Cut; nudity), PG | Review date: 4-Dec-2009
Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus is the dramatization loosely based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last 10 years of his life as told through the accounts of the much envious and aging Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) from an insane asylum. The epic masterpiece spans the better part of 3 hours (director’s cut), which to some might sound like a snooze fest. However, Milos Forman’s scary ability to choose the perfect musical companions to each scene is sure to wake up any dozing viewer. Tom Hulce’s haunting More >
